Praise be to the … God of all comfort,

who comforts us in all our troubles,

so that we can comfort those in

any trouble with the comfort

we ourselves have received from God.

The History of Stephen Ministry:

Stephen Ministry was named after St. Stephen, the first lay person the Apostles asked to care for the needs of the early congregation (Acts 6: 1-6).

Present day Stephen ministry was started in 1975 by Kenneth Haugk, both an ordained minister and PhD prepared psychologist, who found he could not adequately meet the needs of his congregation alone. Dr. Haugk developed the Stephen Series, a complete system of training and organizing laypersons as lay Christian caregivers. July 2002 BG Brown and Carole Stathis attended the Leader’s Training Course in Philadelphia and became the first Stephen Leaders for Jesse Lee. Currently there are 4 Stephen Leaders and  12  active Stephen Ministers to serve our congregation.

Stephen Ministry is a ministry in which one person reaches out to another in times of loneliness; despair; illness; hospitalization; relocation; new living arrangements; life altering change such as child birth; empty nest syndrome; retirement; job change; loss such as loss of a loved one through death or divorce; loss of a job; loss of health; a life altering transition or concern.

Our area network of Stephen Ministry Congregations announces a new training class for Stephen Ministers! The 50 hours of training for all candidates will take place on Monday evenings @ St. Mary Church, 7:00 – 9:30 pm, beginning September 27.

Stephen Ministers are lay congregation members trained to provide one-to-one care to those experiencing a difficult time in life, such as COVID stress, grief, divorce, job loss, chronic or terminal illness, or relocation.

Stephen Ministers come from all walks of life, but they all share a passion for bringing Christ’s love and care to people during a time of need.

Since 1975, more than 600,000 people from more than 13,000 congregations and other organizations have been trained as Stephen Ministers.

Could now be the right time for you to be joining this group of dedicated caregivers?

SM training, taught by area Stephen Leaders, has proved life-changing for many people, providing spiritually-grounded caregiving skills that make a huge impact on both the caregiver and the care receiver. Please prayerfully consider becoming a Stephen Minister! Contact Mary Aly for an application and information or email her at
